How to Cite
ICSAC's model unbundles what traditional journals bundle. The paper is an article of Persistence, the Institute's journal, published online first at its own DOI; the curation record lives at a permanent URL on this site; the annual print and ebook edition of each volume is a separate artifact with its own ISBN. Three things, three citations. Use whichever ones are relevant to what you are saying about the work.
The model
Three artifacts are independently citeable:
- The work — the paper itself, at its DOI, as an article of Persistence (with the volume and article number for papers registered under the Institute’s prefix). This is what other researchers should cite when discussing the science.
- The curation record — the panel reviews, Review Quality Control audit, and curation decision at a permanent URL on icsacinstitute.org. This is what to cite when discussing the review process, the panel’s assessment, or the rationale for acceptance.
- The Persistence print edition — once Volume 1 ships (May 2027), the annual paperback and ebook of the volume is itself citeable as an edited volume with an ISBN.
The author retains copyright on the work. ICSAC’s contribution — the curation record and the annual compilation — is separately attributable. Citing the work alone does not credit ICSAC; the marker “Reviewed by the ICSAC panel” appended to the primary citation is the venue credit. Authors are encouraged to use it on CVs and reference lists.
Worked example
Using The Dynamic Existence Threshold: Organizational Consciousness Across Complex Systems by Nathan M. Thornhill (accepted 2026-04-19).
1. The work
For citations of the science itself. The author’s DOI is the canonical pointer; the “Reviewed by the ICSAC panel” suffix is the venue marker.

2. The curation record
For citations of the review itself — the panel’s methodology, scoring, or specific findings about the paper’s reasoning. Distinct from a citation of the work’s science.

3. The Persistence volume
Online first. Every accepted paper is an article of the open volume from the day its DOI registers, so the journal form is available at once: Persistence, the volume, the article number where the DOI carries one, the year, and the DOI. For papers registered under the Institute’s prefix this is the work citation itself.

In print. Once Volume 1 ships (May 2027), papers included in the annual edition become citeable as chapters in an edited volume as well. The standard form will be:
Thornhill, N. M. (2026). The Dynamic Existence Threshold: Organizational Consciousness Across Complex Systems. In Persistence: A Transdisciplinary Journal, Vol. 1, No. 1 (pp. XX–YY). Fort Wayne, IN: Institute for Complexity Science and Advanced Computing. ISBN XXX-X-XXXXXXX-X-X.
Per-paper page numbers and the volume ISBN will be filled in at print release.
Which one to use
- Citing the paper’s findings — use the work citation. The science belongs to the author.
- Citing the review or referees — use the curation record citation.
- Placing the paper in the journal — use the online-first Persistence form; for the printed annual, the chapter form once the volume ships.
- Citing both the work and the venue — cite the work and let the “Reviewed by the ICSAC panel” suffix mark the venue. Cite the curation record only when the review itself is the subject.
- Referencing the journal as a venue — cite Persistence itself (see below).
- Referencing the institute as an organization — cite ICSAC (see below).
- Referencing a policy, rubric, or process — cite the specific policy URL with an accessed-on date (see below).
Citing Persistence — the journal itself

Citing ICSAC policies
For when you reference the rubric, review process, ethics policy, or another policy document directly. Use the URL of the specific page you are citing; include an accessed-on date since policy pages may be updated.

Per-article citation blocks
Every paper at /publications carries its own “How to cite this paper” block, pre-generated in all three formats for the work, the curation record and, where it differs from the work, the journal form. Copy and paste from there directly.
